APBN, Mar 2020
Ebola virus, HIV, SARS virus, and just recently, COVID-19 — we commonly associate viruses with some of the deadliest infections in history. However, did you know that the next “wonder therapeutic” that could save the world may actually be a virus?

The Medical City pushes for a Phage Revolution, spearheads research for new therapy in the fight against superbugs
Manila Bulletin Lifestyle, Mar 2022
The World Health Organization estimated that by 2050, up to ten million deaths associated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria (or what we commonly refer to as superbugs) will be recorded in Asia-Pacific, including the Philippines. This estimate is due to the growing number of superbugs being reported in the region. These superbugs have been causing deaths because our existing antibiotics are not working anymore. If this problem persists, even what seems as simple as a wound or cough could have deadly consequences.
A Phage Revolution: TMC redefines infectious disease management
Since its creation in 2022, the Phage Revolution Program of The Medical City Enterprise has accomplished feats towards combatting antibiotic resistance, the biggest threat in healthcare in the Philippines and worldwide. With the near completion of its flagship projects, revolutionizing infectious disease management is now within reach.

Physician-scientists uniquely positioned to bridge
the gap between clinicians and scientists
Too hard, boring, useless. These are common descriptions of research too often heard even from physicians. However, the 2022 Most Influential Filipina Woman and 2022 PeopleAsia’s People of the Year awardee, Dr. Regina Berba, begs to differ. “The research work that we pursue today will define how we will do medicine tomorrow,” she states.
The Clinical Trial Unit Enterprise: A small step for The Medical City Network, a big leap for Philippine clinical trials
The Medical City (TMC), through its Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTRI), remains to be among the preferred clinical trial sites by contract research organizations (CROs) in the Philippines for the past five years. With the official implementation of the Clinical Trial Unit Enterprise (CTU-E) this 2023, CTRI paves the way for a new brand of clinical research management in the country—TMC as a pioneering multicenter clinical trial site.
Poetry
Mark is also an author of English and Filipino poetry collection. His first book (Journey to the Lunar Seas) was published in 2023, while his second book (Maria ni Mayari) was published in 2025.
Journey to the Lunar Seas
In this debut poetry book of a young scientist and poet, Mark opens up his heart and mind through poems. His poems describe the evolution of experiences of heartbreak, self-doubt, regret, longing, hope, understanding oneself, acceptance, moving on, and moving forward. The poems in this collection are divided into sections (lunar mare) that will take the readers on a journey of feelings of a young romantic living in this modern world. Throughout the journey, Mark hopes his readers will find comfort in knowing they are not alone in their experience.
